Applied Electrodynamics builds imaging systems that see through solid matter. Our team previously co-invented the iPhone touchscreen and Nest learning thermostat. We’re starting in construction, helping teams map structural elements and utilities inside walls and ceilings. The same platform extends to security screening and cargo inspection. Our mission is to make the hidden physical world machine-readable across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.

Bil Avser previously led antenna technologies at Apple across multiple iPhone generations, including UWB, 5G, and mmWave systems, before serving as Head of Technology at Humane through its acquisition by HP. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, has 35+ patents in electromagnetics and RF systems, and received the IEEE APS Pre-Doctoral Research Award.

Brian Huppi is a hardware engineer and inventor who helped build the earliest iPhone prototypes at Apple, contributing to the multitouch hardware that redefined how the world interacts with devices. He co-invented the first generation Nest Learning Thermostat and later worked on the AI Pin at Humane. He is a named inventor on numerous patents spanning touch interfaces, sensing systems, lighting, and connected devices. Brian holds degrees in Civil and Electrical Engineering from UMass Amherst.

Paul Leutheuser is a hardware product design engineer who drove numerous new iPhone features into production, including the first haptic home button and IPX8 sealed enclosure. He then designed and shipped multiple 0-1 products at Humane, leading the Product Design team post-acquisition. Paul has 11 patents and holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from UC Berkeley.

Founder
George McLean is an applied physicist with wide-ranging experience in semiconductor imaging systems and medical devices and patents in retinal prothesis and wearable physiological monitoring. At Humane he made key contributions to the laser display of the Ai Pin. He holds degrees in physics from MIT and UC Berkeley.

The Problem

Most of the built world is opaque.

Pipes, cables, and structural elements hide behind walls until they're discovered mid-project, driving $20B+ a year in avoidable rework.

Defects remain hidden inside composites until parts break.

Entry teams are missing critical information before they breach a barrier.

The Solution

An imaging platform that uses radio waves to see behind walls. It works just like a camera, requiring no training and producing high-resolution images that are instantly understandable. The resulting point cloud is natively to scale, accurate down to 1mm.

The Team

Four engineers who've worked together for 8+ years, shipped multiple zero-to-one hardware products, and hold 250+ patents.

Bilgehan — PhD in electromagnetics; led antenna technologies on four iPhone generations, shipping the first phones with UWB and 5G mmWave; inventor of the zirconia dielectric resonator antenna.

Brian — built the earliest iPhone prototypes at Apple, co-invented iPhone multitouch and the Nest Learning Thermostat; degrees in Electrical and Civil Engineering.

George — MIT physicist; built x-ray imagers, retinal implants, optical sensors and the world's smallest laser projector.

Paul — Berkeley Mech.E.; ex-Apple and Humane product design lead; co-invented iPhone haptic Touch ID, IPX8 sealing.

What we built

We've built the hardware and imaging algorithms that can see behind composite layers and common building materials (sheetrock, tiles, marble, quartz, brick and insulation). Next step is our handheld platform that fuses our radio imaging with RGB and thermal cameras.

Our Ask

We're looking for intros to decision makers at general contracting firms and industrial inspection teams, and to contacts with military access who can introduce and demo our systems to US defense organizations.
