{"id":104921,"title":"Nitrode - Advancing AI for Game Development","tagline":"Advancing game development through frontier AI research.","body":"Hey YC,\n\nWe’re Ben, Brian, and Sejoon from **Nitrode.**\n\nNitrode is a research company focused on improving game development with AI. \n\n**The Problem - How do we advance game development with AI?**\n\nWe started by building an AI game engine. It got to [**#3 on Product Hunt**,](https://www.producthunt.com/products/nitrode-ai-game-engine) and we gained several useful insights:  despite recent progress in agentic coding, game development remains uniquely difficult for AI models because it requires **(1) strong spatial reasoning**, **(2) reliable tool use/tool-calling**, **(3) strong agentic coding capabilities** and the **(4) ability to operate in real-time environments for complex games**.\n\n**The Solution** \n\nTo advance game development, we believe AI models firstly need to be judged against robust evaluation frameworks that reflect the **actual complexity of the field.** Over the coming months, Nitrode will open-source a suite of benchmarks designed to measure where AI models truly stand in game development. Our first benchmark, [**GameEngineBench**,](https://arxiv.org/abs/2607.03525) evaluates agentic coding performance on C++ game engine tasks in real runtime environments.\n\n![uploaded image](/media/?type=post\u0026id=104921\u0026key=user_uploads/1654263/a084ce2c-86d5-431b-97a1-d2ccf07b3f04)\n\nOur results are clear: model class and reasoning effort are strong predictors of performance, while model rankings align more closely with spatial reasoning benchmarks than with traditional agentic coding benchmarks. **This suggests that game development is fundamentally different from pure coding.** Success requires not only writing correct code, but also understanding space, tools, runtime behavior, and the interaction between systems.\n\nWe also observe significant complementarity across frontier models, indicating that different models exhibit distinct strengths within the game development task space. Mythos/Fable-class models point toward a potential step change in AI game development capability, where improved spatial understanding and stronger tool use combine to produce emergent behaviors that older model generations struggle to match.\n\nOur benchmark has revealed clear model-specific performance gaps across game development tasks, with outcomes that diverge meaningfully from standard agentic coding benchmarks.\n\nWe are also building [Mint](http://mint.nitrode.com), a platform that onboards game development experts to work on custom datasets. Think engine programmers, technical artists, and developers with years of enterprise/indie game development experience. We already have hundreds of contributors across game development and creative software. Whenever you need a certain type of data, we construct and lead a team to produce:\n\n* Post-training /SFT data captured from real workflows: how developers actually build, debug, test, and iterate inside engines and creative tools.\n* RL environments and executable tasks where models learn through execution and feedback.\n* Custom benchmarks and post-training for gaming enterprises: we pinpoint where models fail on real game development tasks, then post-train a custom model to close those gaps.\n\n**Team** \n\nBen and Brian studied Information Science and Computer Science at Cornell, while Sejoon studied Computer Science and Product Design at Stanford. The trio has been building things together for the last six years, from a sports team analytics tool to Nitrode, and are, unsurprisingly, massive gaming nerds. Sejoon is top 400 in the world at moving GeoGuessr and a certified Civ sweat, Brian is ranked in Tetris, and Ben used to be ranked in Minecraft speedrunning.\n\n**Our Ask:**\n\n1.
