This rate is [even lower](https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hlthaff.2017.0325) for specific insurance plans. Moreover, [less than 20%](https://www.notion.so/Transcript-Patient-Messaging-11fb811d9b614ea5bf55b52445aee739?pvs=21) of psychiatrists are accepting new patients. For those who are, the median wait time for an in-person initial appointment is over 60 days.\n\nMany psychiatrists avoid taking insurance because the financial and administrative burdens outweigh the benefits. After covering administrative staff (scheduling, billing, patient support), paying for office space, and disputing insurance denials and underpayments, little profit remains for the psychiatrist.\n\nFor patients with serious mental health concerns, this lack of access and affordability can literally cost lives. The three of us deeply care about mental health and have personally experienced the difficulty of finding high-quality, affordable psychiatric care for ourselves, our family, and our friends.\n\n# **🌱 Opportunity: A huge and growing need**\n\nPost-COVID, [around 32% of U.S. adults](https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/adults-reporting-symptoms-of-anxiety-or-depressive-disorder-during-covid-19-pandemic/?currentTimeframe=0\u0026selectedRows=%7B%22states%22:%7B%22all%22:%7B%7D%7D,%22wrapups%22:%7B%22united-states%22:%7B%7D%7D%7D\u0026sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D) experience mental health conditions annually, equating to about 83 million people. [Approximately 50%](https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/reports/rpt39443/2021NSDUHFFRRev010323.pdf) of these individuals, or 42 million, do not receive necessary treatment. About 25% of those with mental health issues, or 10 million people, require psychiatric care (rather than perhaps just therapy). With a conservative annual cost of $2,500 per patient, this translates to an unmet market opportunity of approximately $25 billion. The demand for psychiatric services is growing at [about 4.1% annually](https://www.grandviewresearch.com/industry-analysis/us-psychiatry-clinic-market-report).
