About the role

Hedgehog is seeking a Director of Sales, Foodservice to manage and scale our foodservice business. This role will be responsible for driving new customer acquisition and managing customer relationships in the foodservice channel.

This is a player-coach role: The Director of Sales will personally close key distributor customers while building and managing a 5-person sales team. They will also work cross-functionally with production and logistics to ensure dependable order fulfillment and exceptional customer service.

This is a commissioned sales leadership role. This role requires an entrepreneurial mindset, strong people management, and eagerness to be in the field, and exceptional organization skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coach sales reps to hit their quotas: help with meeting preparation, attend meetings with them, and share constructive feedback
  • Manage sales reps to deliver exceptional customer service, including prompting orders, coordinating deliveries, and collecting payments
  • Partner closely with logistics and production to coordinate fulfillment and resolve issues. This is a larger operational responsibility than would be typical for a sales leadership role
  • Manage sales pipelines, forecasting, and supporting systems including CRM and order-intake tools
  • Personally own sales processes for high-priority distributors
  • Travel regularly to support customers, distributors, and field sales execution

Characteristics

  • Entrepreneurial: Dynamic opportunity-seeker who finds, pursues, and closes new foodservice opportunities beyond established playbooks
  • Excellent manager: Loves spending time with reps, getting hands on to prep for and attend meetings, and providing coaching
  • Organized: On top of every detail, builds and manages processes to maintain perfect organization, eager to handle operations to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Passion for food & startups: Excited by the opportunity to build a generational food company, and loves the messiness, pace, and ambiguity of an early-stage startup

Qualifications

  • 6–10 years of sales experience
  • Sales team management experience
  • Track record of beating quotas
  • Willingness to travel weekly and work weekends as needed
  • Preferred: experience selling specialty produce or perishable food in foodservice

About Hedgehog

Hedgehog is a climate tech startup building robotic mushroom farms. By using robots to automate production and AI to optimize growing conditions, we grow mushrooms for ~1/3rd the cost. Soon, we will use fungi to also produce mycelium protein, organic chemicals, and animal feed. Our method of cultivating fungi completes a circular food supply. Fungi transform agricultural waste into protein-rich food without using arable land or irrigation. We’re building technology to efficiently cultivate the broad set of fungal solutions that nature has provided.

Hedgehog is led by Jamie Balsillie (McKinsey & Co., Indigo Ag, Stanford MBA) and Wilson Ruotolo (UVA Engineering, Stanford Robotics PhD) and funded by Y Combinator, Haystack, and Nate Storey (Co-founder & CSO of Plenty Ag).
