About the role

What we do

We believe accessing healthcare should be as simple as doing your taxes on TurboTax.

But for the millions on Medicaid, it’s not.

People lose coverage because of administrative barriers—like missing a notice and incorrect documentation. 60–70% of disenrollments in Medicaid happen for these procedural reasons. These are avoidable errors caused by fragmented systems, not ineligibility.

What you’ll do

As an early member of the product operations team at Fortuna, you’ll play a critical role in building a best-in-class consumer product. We work fully in-person 5 days a week out of our NYC office, and believe deeply in the value of a focused, supportive, and tight-knit team.

Your main responsibilities as a product ops associate will include:

  1. Process Operations - Ensure we can scale volume across numerous states, working closely with Engineering to streamline processes:
    1. Review and process high volumes of consumer applications, tracking learnings and patterns for Engineering
    2. Understand nuances / edge cases across state and Medicaid programs (no prior experience necessary)
    3. Identify patterns in user behavior across the full product to collaborate with engineering on product features and address bugs
  2. Consumer Operations - Ensure our Fortuna consumers have the best experience:
    1. Provide timely, empathetic, and high-quality consumer support
    2. Understand and investigate consumer needs and pain points
    3. Collaborate with engineering to identify opportunities to improve user experience and reduce support needs

This role may be for you if…

You want to move fast and learn faster at a startup. You’ll thrive here if you see startups as the ultimate launchpad for your career and want to get deep in the weeds of building. You’ll get exposure to early‑stage company building, working across Operations and Engineering. You’ll have a unique opportunity to influence what we build and how we build it. Some words we think of when we think of our ideal fit: scrappy, high-grit, reliable, resourceful, open-minded, humble, and empathetic

What we’re looking for

Product Mindset

Our philosophy is that everyone should be product-oriented. We’re fundamentally building a consumer product for the masses. As such, we’re looking for a teammate who’s motivated by delivering a seamless, user-centered experience. Our users are everything to us - and you have the power to ensure they have an exceptional experience. If you’ve ever gone out of your way to anticipate someone’s needs, or built systems to make life easier for a busy team, you’ll fit right in.

Ownership

You’ll be trusted to fully execute on goals we set for the team. We have so much to build, it’s important that you are excited to own entire pieces of that. To us, high ownership looks like persistence and resourcefulness, combined with deep knowledge of the processes you’re executing on.

High Velocity

The bar is high - we’re looking someone who is energized by a commitment to excellence, thrives in detail-oriented environments, and can juggle simultaneous goals. You bring passion, persistence, and dedication to what you do.

Respectful Disagreement

We believe it's crucial to be able to openly disagree with anyone on the team. We are looking for someone who doesn't shy away from conflict, but is respectful and empathetic in their approach and always open to different ideas.

Humility

It's important to be able to admit when you're wrong. We are looking for a low-ego teammate who is able to take failures in stride and grow from them.

Requirements

  • 0-1 years of experience (internships count, recent graduates welcome to apply)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset. You’ll use numbers to make decisions (Excel/GoogleSheets), but don’t need prior technical experience
  • Able to work 5 days per week in-person in NYC

What we offer

  • Competitive salary and equity ownership in the company
  • Platinum health insurance plans
  • Free lunch every day
  • All commuter expenses covered
  • $100/month wellness benefit
  • Unlimited PTO
  • 401k plan with company match

Send us a short email (8-10 sentences), including your resume. Tell us about a time that you owned something that you’re proud of, or about a time you pushed through to make something happen. Feel free to be broad, we’re curious about how you thought and what you did.

About Fortuna Health

What we do

Fortuna Health is redefining the consumer experience for Medicaid. We’re helping millions navigate Medicaid end-to-end from eligibility and enrollment to renewing coverage. We're backed by a16z, BoxGroup, YC, and top healthcare angels.

Our product is TurboTax for Medicaid. Today, ~90M Medicaid consumers navigate glitchy websites and long paper forms. The experience is so poor that procedural reasons (e.g., form errors, missing a notice in the mail) account for a staggering 75% of dis-enrollments. We believe this can only be solved with a modern and simple UX that is fundamentally consumer-centric.

Creating Value

The problem at the consumer level produces huge downstream consequences: There's over $50B of administrative waste and lost revenue suffered by Medicaid health plans, providers, and states. By making products that consumers want to use, we unlock immense value for these players. Our vision is to become the consumer-facing digital infrastructure that powers the $800B+ Medicaid ecosystem.

Who we are

We each have multiple years of experience in healthtech — Nikita started her career at Oscar and built pharmacy solutions at Truepill (YC S17), Cydney helped scale Halo Dx from seed to series C on the ops side, and Ben was the first engineer at Juniper (YC W21) where he helped scale the engineering team to 12. We have all had direct experience with Medicaid throughout our careers and have seen firsthand the challenges that affect the population.

We started Fortuna because we care about impact — the abysmal state of the Medicaid consumer journey means that the most underserved people in America can't access the benefits that they need and are entitled to. We believe this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to dramatically improve the human condition for 90M people, and we need the help of high-throughput, growth-minded builders to make it happen.
